Monument to Sadaku
a girl named Sadako. In 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on a place called Hiroshima in Japan. As an after effect of this bomb, many newborn babies were born with birth defects because of the radiation from the bomb. In 1943, a girl named Sadako Sasaki was born. She was two years old when the bomb was dropped. She was diagnosed in 1955 at the age of 12 with a deadly cancer called leukemia. She only had about one year to live. She knew of an old Japanese custom where if you folded a 1000 paper cranes and made a wish, this wish would be granted by the gods. She completed most of them but never finished them all. She died on the morning of October 25, 1955. Her classmates felt so dearly about their lost friend that they finished the cranes for her. A monument has been created to honor her and the sacrifice that she gave. Every year many people make cranes and string them at this monument. Remember, if a bomb had not been dropped on Hiroshima as a result of war, many people, including Sadako would not have died. This is why we should always think before we commit acts of violence.

Here is a video of our contribution to recognize and salute Sadako's efforts to end war for all time.
